There is no magic pill for weight loss!!!!

I actually had a guy write to me yesterday first to ask how he can lose weight without exercise, then to go on and ask if there was a MEDICINE to help him lose weight since he didn't have time to workout. FOR REAL!!

First of all I am not a proponent of just "losing weight". I try to instill in all of my clients and everyone I meet that it's about being healthy and fit...lifestyle changes not temporary weight loss. Sure, you can lose weight easy enough...go on one of those liquid diets-or better yet...stop ingesting food all together and just drink water...you'll lose weight then! It won't be a healthy weight loss, and you'll be pretty damn hungry-but hey, if that's all you care about...have at it! Of course, as we all know, as soon as you start eating food again, that weight will come back three-fold.

What I told him, and I tell everyone....it takes a combination of consistent, nutritious food in healthy portions and regular exercise whether it's weights, biking, swimming, hiking, a combination of those..whatever; just needs to be regular and you do need to get the heart going. It's not rocket science and it's not THAT hard. I pointed out to the person, who claimed to not have time to exercise, that he could be doing push ups and sit ups right now rather than sitting on face book typing to me.

Do you think he's taking my advice? Any guesses?
Ciao for now!

TASTY TUESDAY!

Who says comp prep needs to be boring?

This was our Friday night dinner….

BBQ roo fillets
Brown rice
Asparagus in maple tahini sauce
Sliced avocado w/lemon

Tasted even better than it all looks!

As I mentioned in my Saturday blog, we’ve embarked on a gluten, soy, corn, casein free diet, so the above was all made this way.

The roo fillets I marinated in a sauce that I actually found as a replacement for soy sauce. I cannot remember the website I found it off of-so I totally apologize for that.
It was an awesome marinade and could probably be used with lamb or beef as well.

3 cubes of beef bouillon
1 tsp balsamic vinegar
1 tsp 100% pure maple syrup
½ C of water
I also added about 2 tsp of minced garlic and about a tablespoon of a new oil I found-it’s a blend of canola and red palm oil.

I squished up the bouillon cubes with a fork then used a submersible mixer to give it all a good stir up. You end up with a chunky sort of foam…but it worked really well. I pounded out the fillets and marinated them for about 2 hours.

The maple tahini asparagus recipe came from THE GLUTEN FREE GODDESS website. I think I might add a touch more maple syrup next time though. But it was yum!

So, there you have it…8 weeks out from comp!
Ciao!

It’s Started!

Yep…perusing the recipe blogs and saving all the yummy stuff I THINK I’m going to be totally into making after comp…LOL; that and fantasizing over the cereal ads on TV!

It is amazing how the human brain works…I am not even being super strict yet-but it’s just that thought that “I’m on a comp diet” and in 2 weeks it will be even stricter that gets all of these craving thoughts going. It’s wild!

So here I am, on a totally gray and rainy Saturday afternoon, and I’ve found a heap of food blogs that I hadn’t ever looked through before-and I keep seeing things like “Lemon poppy seed muffins”, “Chocolate chip cookie bars”, “Vanilla brownies”, “Snickerdoodles” the list goes on…and my print out pile is huge….LOL!

One thing I haven’t mentioned in any blogs is that, for reasons I’d rather not get into right now, John and I have embarked on a soy free, gluten free, corn free and casein (from cows milk) free diet. I’m still eating casein myself (cottage cheese & yogurt). So, because we have just started on this new journey, this is why I’ve been perusing new food sites…so all of the above are gluten free. Every gluten-free, soy-free type of website I go onto inevitably has desserts. And though most of them I will probably never even make, they sure look good right now…haha!

So, that's it for now! Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Pics and Measures...

First off...isn't this just the cutest tank! I love it! Not too expensive, fits perfect and I love the feel of it. It took a few weeks to get here...but love it! Here is where I ordered it from...you can make your own too! CLICK HERE
So, here are my pics from 12 weeks (on top...wood screen background) and 9 wks out (below sliding glass door background). Weight down from 54.1K to 52.9K (and it's TOM..so there is a bit of bloat). And all of my skin folds are down so I'm at 70 over 7 spots (was 81 three weeks ago). So, all in all, I'm pleased with the progress so far.

Still need to work on that posing...I'm not even flexing my legs here! Of course, a tan would be mighty helpful too! :-)
So, there you have it!
Ciao!

Comp Dreams...It's all about food!

Yup...two food dreams this week. The first dream, earlier this week, started with me at the grocery store-during comp prep, though I don't know what stage of prep. Anyway-I was walking past the deli/restaurant section and they were making fried cheese wraps-like grilled cheese sandwiches only with wraps; so, naturally I had to have one....or um two. Then my dream switched to me sitting in the bedroom of the house I grew up in as a kid..though I was still the age I am now and in comp prep. I was sitting in there with the door closed, pigging out on a plate of fried eggs with toast & butter...then John opened the door and I tried shoving it under the bed but he totally busted me.

Next dream was just last night...I was at sort of a cafe-6 weeks out from comp, sitting at a window table and I could see all of these other figure gals outside, so I was sort of ducking down so they couldn't see me because I was totally shoving cupcakes into my mouth...like 4 in a row! I remember thinking, in my dream, "I'm 6 weeks out still, no worries!"...LOL! I totally know where that one came from...it's because of people posting these yummy looking desserts on facebook and twitter...YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!...LOL

So, even though during my awake hours, I have had no real cravings at all, my subconscious is telling me something totally different...haha! It's strange too, because until yesterday, I haven't even been super hungry in between meals. I know that will change at 6 weeks when my calories become more restricted though. Let the good times roll!

Just about ready for John to hammer my legs and abs today...looking forward to that since I had to give last weekend a miss due to being ill. Bring it on!

Enjoy your weekend!
Pics and measures tomorrow..pics to be posted Monday...yikes!
Ciao for now!

9 WEEKS!

Dang! I can't believe I'm at the 9 week mark. I'm feeling ok with my bod...will be doing pics and measures this weekend. Of course TOM is visiting early next week-so not happy with that frickin' belly bloat I'm already noticing today. Never mind...the scales are staying down below the 53K mark....measures should show some nice drops too.

Training this week has been ok; looking forward to John hammering me on legs tomorrow since last weekend was a total wash. It looks like the cyclone will be hitting further south....though I feel for those people, I'll be happy if it does not hit here, for obvious reasons!

Not much else to report. How are you going with your goals so far this year? Staying on track?

Oh! For those of you looking for Kangaroo meat recipes, macromeats has a free e-book on their site! CLICK HERE. I haven't tried any of these particular recipes yet, but there are a few that I will definitely be giving a go! Will report the outcome. :-0

Well, have a fantastic weekend everyone!
Ciao for now!

Back in Action!

Well, after a super yucky weekend of being in bed ill, I am pleased to report that today I'm about 90% better. Starting feeling ill Thursday and it just got worse. Bit of a bummer as I didn't even train on Saturday. On the bright side, I lost a kilo....LOL. Not the best way to lose weight...but hey, I'll take the loss! Now I need to keep the weight where it's at....not let it go up again. To do that, I've been extra careful with my portion sizes and making sure everything that passes these lips is completely beneficial to my health and muscles.

I did not do pics or measures this weekend. I know my meassures are down..but figured next weekend would be more accurate as long as I keep the scale down. And I just didn't feel in the mood to pose at all; so next weekend for sure.

In other news; unfortunately there is a bloody category 5 cyclone looming out at sea right now and so far predictions are that it will be hitting the coast by the weekend. Of course, their predictions this year have so far have been off...let's hope they are off on this one is too and it actually fizzles out before hitting land. It was 4 years ago this week that Cat 5 Larry direct hit us. And it was 16 March 1999 when John & I lived in Exmouth and got a direct hit from Cat 5 Vance. How many Cat 5's does one couple have to endure? We've only lived in Aus for 13 years! So, I'm guessing this one won't hit...right? :-)

I'm sure many have already seen the above pic as it was just from this year's Arnold which was just over a week ago. I, as many in the bodybuilding and figure world, was very disappointed with this years winner of the figure division. I mean...I am sorry-but to have placed Monica Brandt 6th?! (That's who is in the pic above, in case you don't know...) She looked better than ever-lean, muscular, feminine. The gal that won, well, no disrespect..but it's just not what I think of when I think of "figure competitor". "Sports Model" is what comes to mind; I just thought she was a bit too smooth, especially her legs, to win a pro figure competition. Granted...that's just my opinion (well and a few others that I know of). Her picture is below...you be the judge.

Ciao for now!

COMP KINI!

My youngest brother hates that phrase, so I had to use it...LOL!

My cosi arrived in the mail today and I am lovin' it! Puts a little zing in my step....which I needed as my enthusiasm was starting to drift off to the side for a few days there. I hate how that happens....when you feel like you are training pretty hard, and eating pretty darn clean...but just don't "feel" like any progress is happening. You know what I'm talkin' 'bout....right?

I going to do measures again this weekend...I was going to do it every weekend starting at 12 weeks...but I recall from last comp prep-there wasn't really allot of change week to week. So until 6 weeks I'll do them every 2 weeks. I think I'll do pics again too as I need to SEE some change for my own sanity.

And now that I got my outfit-it puts a whole new pep in my step...can't wait to get on the treadmill today!

Enjoy the rest of your day...can you believe it's already Wednesday?! Damn!
Ciao for now!

More about the benefits of Omega-3 fats

Most of us have read and heard much about the positive effects of eating foods containing Omega-3’s...but I’m reading a book right now called REAL FOOD by Nina Planck and she has some more interesting info on it. This book is great if you happen to come across it anywhere-so much of what she says makes perfect sense to me, with the exception of her high opinion of pork and lard. She talks about how it’s the “industrial” foods that are the main source of so many of the health problems in the western world today-and she puts forth heaps of statistics and information to back up her argument.

My main point today, though, is some of the info about how Omega-3 fats affect metabolism and contribute to obesity and diabetes.

I’m going to share a few paragraphs straight out of the book.

Let’s look first at the effects on metabolism, because metabolic disturbances are in many ways the root of the 3 conditions of obesity, diabetes & heart disease. Omega-3 fats regulate blood sugar levels and fat burning. DHA (docosahexaenoic acid’ -and essential fatty acid that cannot be produced by our body) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic Acid) in particular are directly involved in activating the expression of genes controlling fat metabolism. For example, mice fed the same number of calories from fish oil are leaner than those fed corn oil, which is rich in omega-6 fats. People whose muscles are low in omega-e fats are more likely to be obese.

Obesity, in turn, leads to diabetes. In the US today, diabetes & metabolic syndrome-or prediabetes-are epidemic.

What is diabetes? When blood sugar rises, the pancreas secretes the hormone insulin, which signals the muscles to take sugar from the blood to muscles. Once in the muscle, the sugar has two uses: as immediate energy or as short term, stored energy, in the form of glycogen, which marathon runners draw on. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin at all. In type 2 diabetes, which accounts for 90-95% of cases, the pancreas does produce insulin, but the muscles don't respond; they are "insulin resistant." When the muscles are deaf to insulin, sugar, which is toxic at high levels, gathers in the blood. Until recently, type 2 diabetes was viewed as an adult disease, and it is still most common in overweight people over fifty-five, but the rising number of cases in children in a distressing trend. diabetes, it seems, is not a disease of age, but of diet. Fish is important, because omega-3 fats decrease insulin resistance.

In type 1 diabetes, the body attacks its own pancreatic cells. Other autoimmune diseased include arthritis, psoriasis, Chrohn’s, lupus, colitis and asthma. A common symptom is chronic excessive inflammation. Omega -3 fats prevent inflammation and omega-6 fats promote it. According to Dr. Artemis Simopoulos (the Omega diet) says the protective effect of omega-3 fats on auto-immune kidney
disease is “one of the most dramatic effects of omega-3 fats on any pathology.
She goes on about heart disease and how the evidence of omega-3 fats preventing heart disease is growing rapidly. It has been shown to reduce blood pressure, reduce clotting, inflammation & triglycerides, reduce the lipoprotein which promotes atherosclerosis & blood clots and a list of other findings as well.

Omega 3 fats have been shown to assist in overcoming depression as well.

In my opinion, from reading this and heaps of other stuff about Omega-3 it is very good for you. Of course, the best source of Omega-3 is fish...so eat your fish; wild salmon is top of the list for this…but if you don’t like fish get some good quality fish oil through tabs or liquid form. Helps with weight and overall health!

Nothing gets a gal focused like photo day!

Dang…I have got my work cut out for me! Did pics and measures yesterday and compared the measures to 12 weeks out of my 2008 comp and I am not nearly as lean as I thought I was! I’ve lost since the last measure 3 weeks ago, so at least I’m going in the right direction-but, well let’s just say the pics don’t lie and they took the wind right out of my sails…lol!

As embarrassed as I am w/the pics, I’m super glad I did them so I could give myself a good smack; now I know I need to A-work on my terrible posing and B-stay super focused on my tighter eating plan.

I suppose in all fairness to myself-I haven’t done much posing practice since 2008-I’m confident it will all come back with PRACTICE. And also, I had just eaten before taking the pics, and as I said Saturday I've been a bit lax with the food over the last week or so. Lastly I am obviously not tan at all. However, what I saw in the pics today is not what I have been seeing in the mirror over the last 2 weeks. Apparently, mirrors lie-but pictures with measures truly tell it all.

Let that be a lesson folks…take pictures to see the real deal! It helps! Case in point; after looking at these pictures (and comparing my measures to 2008) my food was 100% on plan, I did not take one handful of mixed nuts and raisins all day long, did not scoop into any peanut butter (a weak spot of mine last comp!), and I made bread and did not eat any of the yummy soft centre stuck in the bread maker. Today I am down 500grams....gotta love that!

All I can say, though, is thank the heavens that I have 12 weeks!

Below: the top 2 are from 12 weeks out 2008 and the bottom line up was this weekend-exactly 12 weeks 2010. I couldn't find any back shots from 12 weeks 2008.
I can't get myself to show the symmetry poses from this weekend...they are just god-awful! lol! Practice, practice, practice!!!
