Loving It!
I have been really enjoying reading about people staying on the healthy track during the holidays. I'm not talking about counting calories and completely avoiding every not-so-healthy morsel! (I know I've said this before, but personally, I never count calories except for comp prep-and I enjoyed a few sweets over the holidays too!)
What I'm talking about is people just eating within reason-not pigging out and drinking to the point of ache and illness. Simply enjoying some tasty food and the company of friends and family-and getting out for some activity! After all, being balanced means just that-balance; the middle way. Not over-indulgence or deprivation!
It's also been great to read about people who have made decisions to change destructive lifestyle habits-and are doing it NOW. They are not waiting for the magic day of January 1. As LIA posted this week "WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?" What indeed?! If the decision has been made-then act now. The sooner you start to take charge of your health and break the 'bad' habits, the sooner you feel the empowerment and be able to reap the benefits! The benefits being both physical and mental. The more often you say no to the destructive things in your life-the easier it will become! I can literally vouch for this. It will get easier. What have you got to loose except maybe a bad habit?!
Have a safe, healthy, happy New Year!
Bring on the year of the SEXY FIT BITCH!!! Starting today! :-)
Ciao for now!

TASTY TUESDAY!

Roo Meat Balls with Curry Sauce
This was super easy!
about 3/4 K of Roo mince (can use turkey or beef-roo is leaner!)
375g can of Light Coconut Milk
2 Tbs Red Curry Paste
1 Tbs fish sauce
2 cups green beans-blanched
1/4 Cup shredded fresh basil
1/2 C brown rice & 1/2 C white rice cooked (mixed together)
Start rice first...boil up a tad over 2 Cups of water, add brown rice first-bring back to boil add white rice stir and simmer with lid for about 40 minutes.
Whilst that is simmering-make the mince into balls-place on a platter. Boil up a pot of water to bland the beans for about 2 minutes.
Cook balls in batches (I use a big iron wok); set aside on platter. Put milk, paste and fish sauce into wok (or whatever pan you're using); cook on low/med heat just barely to a boil-add beans then balls to heat all through. Turn off heat toss on basil.
Serve over rice (I also put some fresh nasturtiums on top!)
Slice avocado drizzled with lemon is a yummy side!
Bon appetit!

The Gluttony Gene

I was watching the 7:30 Report (here in Aus) last week and they had this very interesting story regarding the scientific studies showing that genetic factors are largely to blame for many folks dealing with obesity. I have copied the transcript here and I have highlighted in bold a couple of interesting points made since I thought it was good to hear out of another person's mouth besides my own-and that is that lifestyle choices are still very important when it comes to combating obesity.
Two thirds of the Australian population now overweight or obese and the scientific community is turning to genetics for an explanation. With Christmas only days away, most Australians are preparing to throw their healthy habits out the window, and dig into all the foods we're told are bad for us. But for some this indulgence doesn't come just once a year
HEATHER EWART, PRESENTER: With Christmas almost here, many of us will throw healthy habits out the window and dig into all the foods we're told are bad for us.
For some people, that inability to stop eating isn't something that just happens once a year. With two thirds of the Australian population now overweight or obese, the scientific community is turning to genetics for an explanation.
The ABC's medical reporter Sophie Scott investigates.
SOPHIE SCOTT, REPORTER: Noeline Rudland tried just about everything in her lifelong battle with her weight.
NOELINE RUDLAND, LAWYER: You would have thought that I was this gregarious, outgoing, jolly woman who, you know, loved life and... but really inside I was just a mess and constantly tormented.
SOPHIE SCOTT: As her weight increased, so did her health problems. At 32, the Sydney lawyer was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and began to develop serious health complications. But it was a stark warning from her endocrinologist which forced her to take action.
NOELINE RUDLAND: That I could either begin a diet and exercise regime or I could prepare to die, and that was the turning point.
SOPHIE SCOTT: For people like Noeline Rudland, science is stepping in to unlock the reasons why maintaining a healthy body weight is so difficult.
KATHERINE SAMARAS, ASSOC. PROF., GARVAN INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH: People who are overweight have got very strong genes promoting them to be overweight.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Studies into identical twins have uncovered many scientific secrets. When American scientists looked at identical twins raised separately in different families they discovered body weight was largely inherited.
STEPHEN O'RAHILLY, PROF., CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY, CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY: Your body weight as an adult was very similar to the identical twin you had never seen and not at all like the family that adopted you. That's the best piece of evidence we have really that genetics is a major influence on adult body weight.
SOPHIE SCOTT: In fact the research found as much as about 70 per cent of the difference in body shape and size is down to your genes.
STEPHEN O'RAHILLY: Obesity of course is a medical problem. It kills you.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Professor Stephen O'Rahilly from the University of Cambridge is a world leader in the field of obesity and genetics. He's found that many severely obese children are missing a key segment of their DNA.
STEPHEN O'RAHILLY: These were, you know, completely intellectually normal children, they were not developmentally delayed in any way, they were just very fat and in general they were very hungry. And they were obese because they were eating too much but they were eating too much because their bodies were driving them to seek food and to consume it.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Up to 60 different genes are linked to obesity. The genes were thought to govern our metabolism or how quickly we burn food but new research shows that the genes actually influence appetite and now much food we need to feel full.
STEPHEN O'RAHILLY: In even in a modern society there are lots of lean people and quite a lot of fat people. What determines who remains lean, who becomes fat, that's your genes.
SOPHIE SCOTT: The discovery that genes play such an important role might explain why so many weight loss programs fail. For people with the obesity genes the simple message to eat less and exercise more may not be enough.
STEPHEN O'RAHILLY: There's an assumption on the behalf of lean people when they look at an obese person they say, well, I find it very easy to remain as lean as I do. Why can't that person just eat less and be slim and healthy like me? And the fact is many obese people would like to and try very hard to, and indeed some even succeed to temporarily but the drive, internal drive of the body to go back to one's natural weight is very powerful.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Even more so when we're surrounded by temptation, difficult at the best of times but overwhelming at this time of year.
KATHERINE SAMARAS: If you happen to be born with the genes for energy conservation and poor appetite control you couldn't have been born in a worst time. We have a 24 hour smorgasbord that is being offering to us constantly.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Professor Katharine Samaras from Sydney's Garvan Institute is one of Australia's leading researchers into the link between obesity and genes. She's already using the new genetic knowledge in treating overweight patients.
KATHERINE SAMARAS: Whilst we tend to blame people for being overweight, and say, oh, if only they weren't so slovenly and if only they didn't eat so much, we don't really, that's really a very poor understanding of what's really going on. What's really going on is that people have got a genetic susceptibility to carrying extra energy for eating more.
SOPHIE SCOTT: And that's what doctors told Noeline Rudland. Even as a child, she was destined to be overweight.Poor diet and a lack of exercise just exacerbate her genetic vulnerability.
NOELINE RUDLAND: It's been important for me to understand that, while I take responsibility for my own poor choice, my own poor lifestyle choices, that it's not just my responsibility alone and that I do have a disease called obesity, that I do have diabetes and that I have a genetic disposition, which is clearly evident in my family.
SOPHIE SCOTT: But some in the scientific community believe that genes are not your destiny and important environmental factors are being forgotten.
EMMA WHITELAW, PROF., QLD INSTITUTE OF MEDICAL RESEARCH: I think that means people tend to feel powerless about their ability to determine their body weight. We really know that if you stop eating you get less fat and that's tending to be lost, I think, in the story.
SOPHIE SCOTT: When all else failed, Noeline Rudland took drastic action and had gastric banding surgery. The band is so tight she simply can't eat very much.
NOELINE RUDLAND: For lunch I will have a food replacement, which is in the form of a chocolate milkshake.
SOPHIE SCOTT: Since the surgery she's gone from size 24 to size 14 in 18 months. She's been able to reduce your diabetes medications and her blood pressure is now under control.
NOELINE RUDLAND: It's a just been such an enormous change to my life that I'm totally grateful.
KATHERINE SAMARAS: Understanding the science of obesity actually helps us be far more compassionate about the way we view the sufferers of the condition of obesity.
SOPHIE SCOTT: With her goal weight still 15 kilos away, Noelene Rudland has taken up hobbies that don't involve food and alcohol. These days she is healthier and happier.
NOELINE RUDLAND: The best thing that was ever said to me was, either get on a program or die, prepare to die. I think you can't put it any more brutally than that or confronting as that and fortunately I had the courage to listen.
HEATHER EWART: Sophie Scott with that report.

How'd Ya' Go?

Did you enjoy the festivities? I did! We had a lovely afternoon lunch with some friends. John ate so much that he was literally stuffed! We both shared some desserts...and neither of us ate dinner when we got home. I was pleasantly full...ended up having a bit of yogurt with jam and protein crunch before bed.
The best part for me was the confidence I felt in not drinking or even wanting to drink. I felt super outgoing and not consumed by thoughts of drinking. In the past I would have been anxious to get home to drink...since I wouldn't have wanted people to know how much I was actually drinking. But yesterday-I saw people drinking and couldn't care less. It really has been a case of simply turning off that desire. I know you all are tired of hearing about it by now...but I just can't put into words the empowerment I feel.
OK-enough of that! So, now that you have eaten to your heart's content...what are you going to do? No reason to wait until January 1! Get out there and get active! Take the kids to the beach and actually get out and have a swim with them. Go for a brisk walk around the neighborhood and say hi to the neighbors! Go for a bike ride, work in the garden-or if you're in the states...shovel snow...hehehe. (sorry!) Whatever you do, there is no reason to wait-put some music on and dance in the living room...Get active! You'll feel better for it...trust me!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

ARE YOU READY?

Wow! Christmas is basically here and next week the New Year…I can barely believe it!
I’m ready for it all! How about you?
It’s been a very…interesting year-to say the least.
We moved into our new property in May; had a major clean up-but came through with flying colours in the end. Have done lots of work outside, some inside renovations, new shed and of course the studio is now ready to rock and roll for the new year; we are really pleased with how it has turned out.
Came out (was pulled out!) of the alcohol closet which has ended up being the best thing to happen to me in ages. It was quite rough those first few weeks of September, but thanks to the support of family and friends-new and old, and of course John-it has all turned out very positive. I knew it was going to happen sooner or later-and I’m glad it’s done and out in the open and I can’t believe I have been able to change my mind set so much. I feel like I’ve completely reversed my desire for alcohol. I strongly urge anyone who THINKS they have a problem with alcohol-quit now-you can do it!
Christmas will be spent with friends-and will be my first social gathering since quitting the alcohol. I’m not worried. Fortunately they aren’t big drinkers-and as I said, I haven’t even had an urge; I feel really good about it. I feel super good about not drinking any more-better than I could have imagined!
2010 is going to be a year of pure fitness and health for me and John as we are finally getting our PT studio going which we have talked about for years. Plus I’m really entrenching myself into figure with three comps lined up; I’M SUPER STOKED!!! I am so ready for them! My body is right where I want it to be for comp prep-I chalk that up to consistency; I eat lots of good food, I don’t starve or deprive myself and I workout regularly. No secret formula, no calorie counting-just good common sense. And now, I’m going to say it again…sorry! With no alcohol in my system I am fitter than I have ever been. Yep-this is going to be a fabulously healthy year-I can feel it!
This year it's all about choices; I'm choosing to be healthy & happy.
How about you? Are you ready for 2010? Are you making plans for a fabulous healthy life? No reason why you can’t! It’s all up to you…your choice!
Have a great Christmas!
Ciao for now!

Choose Your Attitude

Sometimes life does not always deal us the best hand of cards. We can’t always control what happens to us, but one thing we pretty much always have control over is how we deal with with the obstacles life throws at us.
For 2010, one of the most important goals I'm going to make for myself is to choose my attitude. When I wake up each morning, I plan to engage the day with a smile on my face. It won't mean that I will have perfect days and won't have any stresses to deal with, but at least by approaching each situation with the right attitude, maybe it can become less stressful-possibly even educational!
A fabulous example of someone who lives like this is Nick Vujicic. I have blogged about him before, but wanted to point out his story again because I think he is such a true inspiration and a wonderful example of someone who loves life and gets the absolute most out of it he can without letting his disability be an excuse not to.
Born with no arms and no legs he grew up with many struggles and dealt with depression but eventually learned to deal with his disability accomplishing all things that the rest of us need our limbs for. He began to embrace his situation and continually achieved greater things; he swims, plays sports, has obtained a double bachelor degree and heaps more! At 25 years old he's accomplished more than most people twice his age.
He's now a motivational speaker where he shares his view of ceasing to see obstacles as problems, but instead begin to see them as opportunities to grow. Nick challenges others to examine their perspective and look beyond their circumstances. Nick wholeheartedly believes that there is a purpose in each of the struggles we encounter in our lives and that our attitude towards those struggles can be the single most effective factor in overcoming them. You can read Nick's whole story at his website Attitude is Altitude here.
Would you like to join me? Let's go into 2010 with a smile on our face...it's our choice! What have you got to loose by choosing to be happy! Let Nick be our example!
For some great positive affirmations about choice, Rae Cattach posted this great little video earlier this week.
Cheers all have a great weekend! Ciao for now!

Photos of Fit Women-Inspiration or Irritation?

Well, if you've read this blog for even only a few weeks, you probably know how I feel as I've got fit chicks plastered on many blog posts..LOL! Yep, I find these pics motivational. But, I'm curious about what you think. When you see fit chicks on blogs or in magazines does that motivate you to get up and get moving, maybe push a tad harder during a workout? Or does it annoy you by pointing out that maybe you can't get quite that particular shape? Perhaps it downright depresses you or maybe you can't even stand many of the more muscular looks.
Whatever feelings these types of photos bring on...I want to hear about it. Be honest, be brutal...curious minds want to know!
Cheers all and ciao for now!

Exercise and Depression
Though I’ve never suffered from severe depression, there have been times in my life that I’ve definitely been down in the dumps. For me, exercise has always been a great mood elevator.
I know that many people tend to suffer greatly from depression over the holiday season. Knowing how much exercise lifts my spirits, I researched how exercise might be able to help people who find themselves suffering right now.
How does exercise help? Well, studies show that exercise releases feel-good brain chemicals that may ease depression (neurotransmitters and endorphins) and reduces immune system chemicals that can worsen depression. Exercise has many psychological and emotional benefits too. Some of these include helping a person to gain confidence, taking a person's mind off of their worries & increasing social interaction by going to a gym or getting involved in fitness classes or other active groups.
A key factor to realize here is, exercise doesn’t just have to mean lifting weights(though you probably know that I’m a huge strength training “pusher”..hehehe.) Exercise can be simply getting out to do some gardening or going for a brisk walk. Anything that gets you off the couch and moving is exercise that can help improve your mood. As I’ve stated in previous blogs and vlogs, once you start, and realize how good it makes you feel-you’ll probably want to find more exercise oriented activities.
How do I get started? This can even be a challenge for folks that aren’t suffering from depression, but just looking at making some positive lifestyle changes. Below are some tips for anyone wanting to figure out where to begin. Always check with your doctor before starting any new exercise program.
Identify what you enjoy doing. Figure out what type of physical activities you're most likely to do, and think about when and how you'd be most likely to follow through. For instance, would you be more likely to do some gardening in the evening or go for a jog in the pre-dawn hours? Go for a bike ride or play basketball with your children after school? Do what you enjoy to help you stick with it.
Get your mental health provider's support. Talk to your doctor or other mental health provider for guidance and support. Discuss concerns about an exercise program and how it fits into your overall treatment plan.
Set reasonable goals. Your mission doesn't have to be walking for an hour five days a week. Think realistically about what you may be able to do. Tailor your plan to your own needs and abilities rather than trying to meet unrealistic guidelines that you're unlikely to meet.
Don't think of exercise as a chore. If exercise is just another "should" in your life that you don't think you're living up to, you'll associate it with failure. Rather, look at your exercise schedule the same way you look at your therapy sessions or medication — as one of the tools to help you get better.
Address your barriers. Figure out what's stopping you from exercising. If you feel self-conscious, for instance, you may want to exercise at home. If you stick to goals better with a partner, find a friend to work out with. If you don't have money to spend on exercise gear, do something that's virtually cost-free, such as walking. If you think about what's stopping you from exercising, you can probably find an alternative solution.
Prepare for setbacks and obstacles. Give yourself credit for every step in the right direction, no matter how small. If you skip exercise one day, that doesn't mean you can't maintain an exercise routine and may as well quit. Just try again the next day.
If you exercise regularly but anxiety or depression symptoms still interfere with your daily living, see your doctor or other mental health provider. Exercise is a great way to ease symptoms of anxiety or depression, but it isn't a substitute for psychotherapy, medications or other treatment in severe cases.

Tasty Tuesday and COMP STUFF!!!
Mango Marinade:
2 mangoes-peeled & chopped
2 Tbs lime juice
2 Tbs chopped coriander or 1 Tbs coriander paste
2 Tbs honey
4 Chicken breasts (pounded)
Put it all into a blender and blend to thick liquid form.
Pour over chicken breasts and refrigerate for 1-3 hours. Grill 5-7 minutes each side.
I served with rice (brown & white mixed) & snake beans and drizzled it all with some soy sauce. Also served some sliced tomato drizzled with lemon juice.
Now to the COMP STUFF!!!
I was perusing blogs yesterday, and after reading LAUREN'S post about comp shoes (she needs some advice from tall girls!!) I thought I might as well start looking at some sites too. I sold my shoes from last comp, thinking I would never compete again...LOL!
Anyway-I found a site in my favourites that I had saved about 6 months ago...and low and behold... $30 Aussie dollars for a beautiful pair of comp shoes!!! Needless to say I was pretty excited-so I ordered them! They are cute too...they should come this week-and if you're nice (hehehe) I'll show them on my next VLOG.
$30 Aussie dollars! can you frickin' believe that?! I will share the site once I receive them and can say they are fine. I should have them in the next day or so. WOOHOO!!!
Can you tell I'm excited? Fun, fun, fun!!!! Bring on the 2010 comps! I'm stoked!

A Few of My Favorite Things VLOG
Nothing new here, just tried and true! You're most likely aware of all of these items-but maybe had forgotten how good and convenient they are. Please see notes below for some info I left out of the vid. (Oh, and yes-still on my little camera-waiting for the after Chrissy sales for a real video camera...I'm still researching and would love more input on what to buy!)
NOTES:
1) The U.S. Food & Drug Administration does not recommend washing fruit & veg with soap & water. The product I mention is made with natural ingredients-as are several I found online in Australia.
2) The crunchy protein is a whey protein as opposed to soy protein.
3) I don't recommend eating tuna every day due to the mercury levels...2 or 3 times a week max....and I don't want to know about it if you don't like tuna...hehehe!
Have a great week!

Weekend Fun!
My girlfriend forwarded this to me a while back, I think it's cute.
Have a great weekend!
A Human Interest Story:
Toward the end of Sunday service, the Minister asked, 'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?' 80% held up their hands.
The Minister then repeated his question. All responded this time, except one small elderly lady.
'Mrs. Neely?'; Are you not willing to forgive your enemies?”
‘I don't have any.’ She replied, smiling sweetly.
'Mrs. Neely, that is very unusual. How old are you?
'Ninety eight,' she replied. The congregation stood up and clapped their hands.
'Oh, Mrs. Neely, would you please come down in front & tell us all how a person can live ninety eight years & not have an enemy in the world?'
The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said, 'I outlived the bitches.'

AGAINST THE ODDS...Women of Strength
Tricia Downing
As an elite road and track cyclist, Trish Downing “gave back” to the community by volunteering her cycling skills as a pilot for visually impaired riders. Little did she know that an accident in the Fall of 2000 would put her on the other side of the equation.
Trish was training in Golden, CO when she was hit by a car and suffered a T-4 spinal injury. Her back was broken, but not her spirit. From her hospital bed, Trish wrote out her first grant request to CAF – for a handcycle that would get her back on the road … and back into life. Trish understands that her accident was not an end, but a new beginning. And what a new beginning it has been. Trish was named USA Triathlon’s Physically Challenged Athlete of the Year for 2003. (source: Challenged Athletes Foundation)
Scout Bassett
For the first seven years of her life, she was in a government orphanage in China, doing chores like mopping floors & washing dishes. She has some idea of how she lost her leg; she knows she was abandoned in 1989 at the age of one, badly burned by a chemical fire that claimed her right leg up to the mid thigh.
She was adopted by an American family at the age of 6, but she credits the orphanage for making her tougher. “Without those experiences, I don’t know that I would have the strength I have today.”
The petite, 4-foot, 8-inch 21-year-old spends 12-15 hours each week training for the dozen or so races she competes in each year. She often swims half a mile before class, runs & bikes whenever she can and puts herself through a mini-triathlon almost every weekend: a half-mile swim, 12 mile bike ride and 3 to 4 mile run. She’s won silver 2 years in a row at the ITU World Triathlon Championships. (source: UCLA Today)
Tracey Moore
At the age of 38, Tracey purposely stepped onto the train tracks at the Wardlow Station in Long Beach in an attempt to end her “pathetic” life, as she refers to it. It was a life ravaged by alcoholism and the human wreckage left in its wake. Tracey’s right leg was amputated below the knee that day. She received a craniotomy the next day to mend a depressed section on the back of her skull. She has a steel plate in her head. Even the failed suicide attempt wasn’t enough to rattle her into sobriety. The day she had the staples removed from the top part of her leg and her head, Moore hobbled to the liquor store on crutches and was off on another binge.
In the fall of 2002, Tracey got booted out of a sober living home. She wound up in a trashy motel. One day she woke up beaten up and bruised. She had no recollection of what happened.
Finally, on Oct. 5, 2002, looking unkempt with dried vomit on her dress, Tracey checked herself into the rehabilitation program at the Salvation Army in Anaheim. She was done killing herself.
At about 90 days of sobriety, the man who designed Moore’s prosthetic leg (who she endearingly refers to as her “leg man”) encouraged his client to train for the 1 1/2 mile swimming segment of the San Diego Triathlon Challenge. She completed the 1 1/2-mile swim.
“After I did it, I got the bug,” she said.
To date, Tracey has participated in 18 triathlons and is often the only amputee competing.
She says her greatest triumph was completing the 2006 Great Escape from Alcatraz, an adventure race starting with 1 1/2-mile swim in frigid water with a swift current, then a two-mile run followed by an 18-mile cycling segment and finally a 6 1/2 mile run over rugged terrain.
Tracey finished dead last, but received a medal for finishing first in the female physically challenged athlete division. She was told she was the only female amputee to have completed the 26-year history of the race.
Tracey is now sober for five years. Comparing her days as a “legless drunk” to her present life as a mother, wife, mentor and athlete, Moore is sometimes mystified. Her source of strength, however, is clear. "I’ve heard of a lot of people who lose limbs who sit around feeling sorry for themselves,” Moore said. “I am doing more with one leg than I ever did with two.” (Source: Lou Ponsi, The Orange County Register)

Fit because they WANNA BE!
In last weeks VLOG I mentioned people saying to me things like “well, it’s easy for you to work on your fitness Raechelle, you don’t have kids to take care of or an an office to go to every day”. So, I wanted to share with the nay-sayers, some gals that I know of who have families, jobs, households to take care of, and are not only fit, but went from very un-fit to being fabulous competitors whilst taking care of everything else! They made the time because they wanted to. They stopped making excuses and organised their lives to make time for their health.
Cath- 49 year old Nana who weighed 83kg (183 lbs) with Body Fat% of around 40% in January 2008, 16 months later I competed at 54kg (119 lbs) and 7% body fat in the INBA Brisbane Competition and placed 4th out of 8 in the Masters Figure Class. (Cath's blog)
Cath-before & after:
Tara- mother of three young children weighed a whopping 110kgs [242lbs] and lost an amazing 54kgs [119lbs] (Tara's blog)
Tara-before:
Tara-after:
Melita-single mother of two kids had gained a considerable amount of weight, an uncomfortable 40+ lbs (20 kilos). Melita was "bursting out of my size 12 clothes." (Melita's full story)
Melita-before:
Melita-after:
So, what's your excuse now?
Have a great week!

100 Days Alcohol Free....
And I feel better than I have in years; mentally, physically and spiritually. After 3 and a half months of not drinking, I feel heaps of energy, many of the aches and pains that I had been suffering through have healed, and I feel very content and calm. I even had a dream the other night in which I was out to dinner with family & friends (and a few strangers) and we were making plans to go out to some parties and someone (a stranger) kept asking me if I was sure I didn't want a drink...and I was completely content and happy to say no, I have no desire at all. In my dream! I was stoked when I woke up in the morning. I know that 100 days isn't really that long in the big picture; but I just feel so good.
It's because of this, I want to share the stages that I have gone through mentally and what has helped me through the cravings etc. I know other people have either just quit or are thinking about quitting drinking and I want you to know that cravings may come-but they WILL pass. Even if you have an addiction to something else-food, drugs-the cravings will pass you just have to be strong and aware of what you feeling.
The first few weeks of quitting I did have a sense of empowerment, but this was quickly followed by thoughts of regret about telling so many people, thoughts that I really didn't have a problem I was just not happy, thoughts of that I might drink in the future. But fortunately I read the book RATIONAL RECOVERY by Jack Trimpey. This book is pretty much the opposite way of mainstream thinking when it comes to alcohol addiction. It's very anti AA and the 12 steps program (although I do know AA has worked for many people-I also believe it has failed many people). For many people AA does not work, and there is an alternative. I believe, as the author, that there is no disease. This may be politically incorrect-but that is how I have always felt. Now, if believing it's a disease gets you to quit and stay sober-then that is great. But I feel that for many people it simply gives them an excuse to continue-like it's out of their hands. This is how I feel though I know it will piss some people off; but think about it-there are no tests for diagnosing the "disease". You don't get it until you start drinking. And the 12 step people say the ONLY way to stay sober is through AA. That just does not make sense.
In the book RATIONAL RECOVERY he puts it quite bluntly-you need to just quit. Period.
He talks about the addictive voice that will bring up suggestions like "maybe I'll allow myself to drink if I know I'm going to die from cancer" Or "if someone else dies...I would need it"...when in fact thoughts like this are merely something for your addictive voice (beast) to cling to and you end up almost waiting for something to happen so you have an excuse to drink! Same as calling it a disease. This feeds into the addictive voice-"well, I have a disease, of course I can't control it, so I'll just drink"
I've said it before and I'll say it again-if believing in the disease keeps you from getting sober-then keep on believing-whatever works! And obviously if going to AA keeps you from drinking-and I know it does work for many, keep going back! But if you live in an area that is limited in the AA programs, and you don't believe in the disease-you can still quit-there are options. That is all I'm saying-and it's these other options that are working for me.
Having said all of that...I want to point out my second line of defense. Even though the book RATIONAL RECOVERY gives you a way to just quit, a person has to continue to work at it. Just like with fitness and health-you can't just read one book or do one workout and be fit for the rest of your life. You have to continue to work at it. So, for me that is through meditation and books on meditation & Buddhism.
Through meditation, I can be more fully aware of my cravings when they come (though I really and truly haven't had any for several weeks now!), and be aware of everything going on in my mind and body at the time of the craving. By the time you finish "watching" the craving...the craving is gone! And this can totally be used for any addiction-food, sex, drugs, alcohol.
I did find a book, which actually relates Buddhism to the 12 step program (so it's opposite of RATIONAL RECOVERY)-but it really helps in observing these cravings and understanding them better. The book is ONE BREATH AT A TIME, by Kevin Griffin. He was a drunken rock and roller who combined Buddhism and the 12 step program to overcome his addiction.
Now obviously, there is way more to Buddhism and meditation-and though I've studied it for years, there is soooo much to learn and so much information-I can't possibly begin to try to teach any thing on it. I am not anywhere near being a teacher. I am simply sharing what is working for me.
If you are thinking of quitting something that you THINK is harming-I urge you to do so and do it now. Then go out and find what works for you to overcome the addiction for ever.
If you don't agree with my thoughts, that is your prerogative; but as a wise blogger said to me-it's my blog, I can say what I feel. I hope, though, that this just helps people who may be struggling with an addiction-and know that other options do work. And quit now!
Have a great week!
Ciao for now!

Quote for the day
It is not the circumstances of our lives in and of themselves that create our suffering, but the craving to have our lives meet the demands of our self-serving egos.

It’s harder to stay fit as you get older…?

How many times have we in the fitness industry heard this excuse? I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard it, LOL! And of course it’s very often followed by, “I don’t have time”. As LIA pointed out in a recent blog, what people are really saying is I don’t WANT to work out. That’s what it comes down to really.
First the age issue-people in their late 30’s, 40’s and 50’s use the age excuse over and over-but I’m sorry; unless you are truly medically, physically incapacitated, it is not HARDER to stay fit. I’ll be 43 next year-you’ve seen my pics; John will be 50-he still fits in the exact same jeans he wore 15 years ago (yes we still have his jeans from 15 years ago, they’re Levi-classics-LOL). We have simply followed a very consistent pattern of pretty healthy eating and training over the years. Sure we have a few more aches and pains-but no way would I say it’s harder-nope, sorry. It’s only harder if you are eating too much (and maybe not particularly healthy) food for the amount of activity that you are doing and you tell yourself you are too old-that’s it. And look at Ruth Frith (pictured above); 100 years old and throwing the shot put! How does she do it? Well, she doesn't smoke or drink & she works out regularly-and she's having fun doing it!
As far as not having time-well, people always manage to make time for what they truly want and will make excuses for what they don't want. I remember reading a book by a Buddhist teacher who taught meditation to prisoners-and one prisoner actually said “I really want to meditate more, I just don’t have time”….HE’S IN PRISON AND DOES NOT HAVE TIME? Hmmmm. Translation-“I really don’t want to meditate”.
You have to be honest with yourself-do you WANT to get fit? If not, fine, that’s totally your business-but just admit it. Forget the excuses. What’s the point really? But if you do want to get fit…CALL ME! :-) ha ha!
Really, though, if you truly want to you WILL make the time. If you want to get started-just sit down and have a good look at your schedule. Do you really have to sit and watch that stupid show on tv-why not go for a walk instead? You will probably feel quite invigorated!
For more tips on ways to get started, check out Lia's blog link above-or like I said-CALL ME!
Have a great weekend!

GA GA FOR CARDIO!
Lady Ga Ga that is…LOL! I love listening to her music when I get on the treadmill-especially the club style remixes-they really get me revved! I love any remix really-PCD, Christina, Black Eyed Peas-stuff from the 80’s-love it! If you wanna get me something for Chrisssy-send me remixes-LOL!
Thanks for all of the positive feedback on the vlog; it’s fun; I think I will be doing it again, probably weekly-I have a few ideas lingering around my brain-but feel free to throw in your two cents if you have something you want to see or hear about! Yes, will be high-lighting the new studio when it's completed!
Did some work on the herb garden and veg patch earlier this week-so thought I’d share some pics-nothing terribly exciting…..
Have to get very covered up to avoid the bloody march flies while working on the new veg patch-
The herb garden; pre-weeding-
And here is my jogging partner…well speed walk and jog-lol…she’ll be 15 next year but still gets a burst of energy every now and again.
Enjoy the rest of your week!
Ciao for now!

Baby's First Vlog!
Well-I did it! Since a few gals have been doing it or talking about doing it, and of course I've watched Kelly O for, what a year now-and Jackie, I decided to jump on the band wagon! Just for fun, don't know if I'll make a habit of it. I just did it on my digital camera-didn't want to run out and by a video camera in case it really doesn't turn out. So, here ya go-pretty short because I think I only get about 3 minutes on the camera so-I tried to fit in a bit of my history quickly. Dang-it takes forever to upload to You Tube! Let me know what you think-yes I'm perspiring-it's summer in the tropics! And yes, I say Ummm and So quite a bit. So ummm-there!
:-)

TASTY TUESDAY
PUMPKIN PIE
Sorry, no pic; still on John's laptop-I don't feel like fiddling with uploading from camera to here-all the connections are in the back and the AC is wanky-so don't like to move it around.
Anyway-I had a request for my pumpkin pie recipe that I made last week-I use fresh pumpkin. I don't make my own crust though.
So, here it is
1 pre-made frozen pie crust of your choosing
2 cups of chopped pumpkin (or butternut squash-whatever is available)
3 egg whites
2 TBL brown sugar
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp nutmeg
1 small can (I think it was 185 ml)light evaporated milk
Boil pumpkin until it's soft enough to mash-drain. Mash then add all other ingredients (except pie crust) and blend with mixer. Will be quite runny. Put pie crust onto a baking sheet (keep crust in the tin it came in)-unless you are making your own crust-then a glass pie plate is fine. Pour pumpkin mixture into crust. Bake for 15 minutes at 200C (425F) then reduce to about 180C (350F) and bake for about 40-45 minutes-or until knife inserted near centre comes out clean.
It's yummy-and pretty darn healthy with pumpkin and egg whites and minimal added sugar! I served with a reduced fat whipped topping.
Enjoy!
