It’s harder to stay fit as you get older…?

How many times have we in the fitness industry heard this excuse? I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard it, LOL! And of course it’s very often followed by, “I don’t have time”. As LIA pointed out in a recent blog, what people are really saying is I don’t WANT to work out. That’s what it comes down to really.

First the age issue-people in their late 30’s, 40’s and 50’s use the age excuse over and over-but I’m sorry; unless you are truly medically, physically incapacitated, it is not HARDER to stay fit. I’ll be 43 next year-you’ve seen my pics; John will be 50-he still fits in the exact same jeans he wore 15 years ago (yes we still have his jeans from 15 years ago, they’re Levi-classics-LOL). We have simply followed a very consistent pattern of pretty healthy eating and training over the years. Sure we have a few more aches and pains-but no way would I say it’s harder-nope, sorry. It’s only harder if you are eating too much (and maybe not particularly healthy) food for the amount of activity that you are doing and you tell yourself you are too old-that’s it. And look at Ruth Frith (pictured above); 100 years old and throwing the shot put! How does she do it? Well, she doesn't smoke or drink & she works out regularly-and she's having fun doing it!

As far as not having time-well, people always manage to make time for what they truly want and will make excuses for what they don't want. I remember reading a book by a Buddhist teacher who taught meditation to prisoners-and one prisoner actually said “I really want to meditate more, I just don’t have time”….HE’S IN PRISON AND DOES NOT HAVE TIME? Hmmmm. Translation-“I really don’t want to meditate”.

You have to be honest with yourself-do you WANT to get fit? If not, fine, that’s totally your business-but just admit it. Forget the excuses. What’s the point really? But if you do want to get fit…CALL ME! :-) ha ha!

Really, though, if you truly want to you WILL make the time. If you want to get started-just sit down and have a good look at your schedule. Do you really have to sit and watch that stupid show on tv-why not go for a walk instead? You will probably feel quite invigorated!
For more tips on ways to get started, check out Lia's blog link above-or like I said-CALL ME!
Have a great weekend!

Great post Raechelle, like I've probably mentioned at some stage in my Blog, Michael(hubby) and I are fighting a losing battle with his parents. They are in their 70's, and gaining weight constantly. They were here last weekend, and my mother-in-law told me my father-in-law has gained 7kg in the last 4 weeks (WTF...?) Mind you, this man had a double bi-pass a few years ago and has many health issues like high blood pressure and cholesterol...they are both classified as "obese".
It really peeves me when we take them out for coffee and they order full cream milk cappucinos, when we suggest they have skim milk, their response is :"If we can't have a treat at OUR AGE..." aaaaaargh !!!! I hate that excuse...They think Michael and I are "obsessed" about our weight and fitness, but we are both trying to learn from our parents' mistakes to avoid bad health in our older years...
Sorry about the rant, but it's good that there's someone out there who thinks like we do.

I agree, some people dont find the time, because they dont put exercise as a priority. What people dont realise is that exercise doesnt have to be hardcore workouts, any form of moving is better then none at all, people have preconceived notions of how things should be rather then just getting back to basics, and moving their bodies more in a way they enjoy.

Exercise is amazing, just dont make it a chore.

Good post!

GREAT post. I certainly agree. I notice FOR SURE, NO DOUBT that my body and my "metabolism" has changed a LOT the past year. I was shocked. But that's not an excuse, it's simply time for me to say, What Am I Gonna Do About It?? Lay down and get fat?? I don't think so. Make adjustments, that's what I am working on now.
We CAN succeed, it's all a matter of our efforts. Period.

Who care's what anyone thinks of your post, it's your blog Raechelle. If they think it's condescending which by the way it wasn't then simply don't read it and move on.
