Why water is important for fat loss and building muscle

We all know that we are supposed to drink heaps of water whilst trying to lose weight and get fit-but generally, we never hear why. Well, I saw an article in a magazine this month, and did a little more research into it. It’s quite simple really.

Basically, it all comes down to the liver & kidney functions. If the kidneys are water deprived, they can’t function properly. In this case the liver has to take over the job of the kidneys-and then isn’t able to do it’s primary functions very well. One of those functions is converting stored body fat to energy. If the liver doesn’t convert that stored fat into energy, it just sits there!

If everything is working properly, you end up with Ketones, a natural byproduct of fat burning; they are flushed out of the body through urine. Drinking water helps to flush them out, thereby improving the fat burning process. Also, if you are following the advice of most bodybuilders, figure competitors, coaches etc-you are eating more protein in order to build muscle; one of the chief byproducts of protein metabolism is urea (an unwanted waste prodcuct). Water helps to flush this out too!

Besides not metabolizing fat, without water, your body isn’t digesting food as efficiently, your heart may be overworked, and on a hot day, there is danger of heat stroke. Since water is lost throughout the day by body functions and sweating, it must be replenished.

Another reason water is important, dehydration can signal your body to eat because breaking down food releases water. Don't be fooled when really your body is asking for water! This happens allot at night-I do believe it’s a cause of the dreaded “midnight munchies”! Personally, I keep water by the bed and sip anytime I wake up during the night.

My research also uncovered this important fact about why we need water for fat loss-especially when we are trying to build muscle; dehydration stimulates muscle destroying hormones-pretty much defying the whole point of working out!

So, I say DRINK LOTS OF WATER!!!

The minimum recommended amount is 6 glasses a day. Personally, I drink about 3 or 4 liters a day and most coaches and trainers will probably agree that that’s a better goal.

“But how can I fit that much water into my day?”

Here are a few tips:

-Start off the day with a big glass of water right when you get up.

-Carry it with you wherever you go.

-Drink large amounts while working out and taking your supplements-makes the supps go down easier too!

-Maybe try a few glasses with a slice of lemon or lime

-I remember reading in Tosca Reno’s book “The Eat-Clean Diet”-that she starts each day by filling 4 bottles of water that way when she’s done with each one, she knows how much she has consumed.

So, what are you waiting for? Go get that glass of water and drink! For more information about how water can help you with weight loss check this site out...Drink

Thanks for this. Yeah I really need to improve this area. I seem to drink heaps at work as we have a water cooler and I just keep filling my glass but at home I forget.

BTW I have that book by Tosca Reno too, she's a star!

Cheers

Frankie

I'm chugging along with the water as well. It really makes me gag, yuck, I really hate it, except after training, but I used to hate spinach when I was a kid, but kept eating it cos it was good for me, now I love it. What doesn't kill me makes me stronger...

Great article! I down around 4-5 litres a day, I reckon the reason it keeps your fat down is because you are always jogging to the toilet LOL! We use bottled water cause the tap water here tastes yuk but I now feel sick if I don't drink at least 3 litres a day.

Yes FRANKIE, it's strange-water being so vital-it takes so long for our bodies to remind us we need it! and yay on Tosca!

Hey there ESSIE! Have you tried spicing up your water with a bit of lemon? Keep up the good work anyway-your body will definitely thank you for it!

Ahh the water debate! I was told by WW's that the only way to lose weight was to drink 6-8 glasses of water a day... hmmmm
I drank NONE and lost 61 kilos. Go figure that one out.
I DRINK DIET COKE, full stop, end of story.
